OVERCOMING BEGINNERS' FEAR TO SALSA DANCING

You have nothing to fear except for fear itself
.....and perhaps a partner with questionable personal hygiene!

The bug that is Salsa has bitten you. You have been going to classes. You have been steadily progressing. Sometimes though, you just feel like you have hit the proverbial wall. Maybe even regressed a little from the impact. What is happening? Shouldn't we be getting better all the time? Take heart. What you are going through right now or likely to go through in the near future is enormously normal. From a recent survey of beginner dancers and people who are looking to venture into the wonderful world that is Salsa, we have discovered some common concerns.

Here are the 10 most common fears in starting or progressing with Salsa in no particular order:

  • Fear of inadequate rhythm
  • Lack of confidence
  • Embarrassment
  • I suffer from TLF Syndrome (Two Left Feet)
  • Don't know anyone in the class and don't have anyone to go with
  • Fear that "I wouldn't get it"
  • The good dancers make it look easy, it is obviously hard
  • No previous dancing experience
  • Concerned with messing up steps when dancing with someone more experienced
  • Fear of looking stupid

Maybe you can relate to some of these concerns. Maybe you can relate to all of them. The good news is that you are not the only one. Chances are, that all of us have felt at some stage, these concerns too. Just recognise that it's ok to have these concerns - what you choose to do with them is up to you, but remember this: THE LEARNING PROCESS IS ABOUT TRYING SOMETHING NEW.
